The Abacus application presents users with the opportunity to learn counting using a historical tool directly on smartphones and tablets.
Traditionally, the abacus, also known as a counting frame, was utilized in various cultures including Europe, China, Japan, and Russia long before the widespread usage of the Hindu-Arabic numeral system. This application allows exploration of both primary categories of abacuses:
- Base 10 Abacuses: Commonly found in Europe and Russia, where each wire contains 10 beads. Each bead signifies a unit value that corresponds to its particular wire position (units, hundreds, thousands, etc.).
- Mixed Base Abacuses: Such as (5,2) or (4,1), where each wire is divided into two sections: a left part with beads representing values of 5 units and a right part with beads representing 1 unit. These are predominantly used in Asia.
The Abacus application includes features for writing numbers and viewing their decimal representations at the bottom of the screen. Users can also perform arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The application provides a nostalgic experience for older generations while engaging younger users with this classic tool.
Customization options allow users to select the number of wires displayed on their screen. Additionally, there's a sharing feature that enables users to share their number creations with friends via social media platforms.
